Canada’s Public Health Care System

Canada’s public health care system is administered at the provincial level, and each province offers its own insurance plan to cover medically necessary services. Understanding these plans helps ensure you and your family can access essential health services wherever you live in Canada.

Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)

British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP)

Health Insurance BC (HIBC) is the administrative operations of the Medical Services Plan. MSP provides coverage for medically required services of physicians and surgeons and for dental or oral surgery when medically required to be performed in a hospital. Resident employees working 30+ hours a week are eligible immediately upon request; non-resident employees working 30+ hours a week are eligible following a 90-day waiting period. Provincial replacement coverage maybe available.

Ontario Health Insurance Policy (OHIP)

OHIP provides coverage for most medically necessary services. Contact the Ministry INFOline at

Sun Life Supplemental Extended Health Care

Supplemental group policy with SunLife covers medical expenses, prescription drugs, and vision. Employees working at least 30 hours a week are eligible after 1 month of uninterrupted service. Bi-weekly cost of coverage is $4.36 Single / $10.29 Family.

Medical Coverage

  • No deductible; No coinsurance on medical expenses
  • Up to $10,000 per year for private duty nurse
  • Semi-private hospital accommodation
  • $1,000 per person, per specialty per year for all non-mental health practitioners, and $1,000 per year combined for the following mental health practitioners:
  • Psychologist/Social Worker
  • Psychotherapist
  • Registered Clinical Counsellor
  • Marriage & Family Therapist
  • Out of Country emergency and travel assistance
  • Coverage ends before retirement or age 70
  • Survivor benefits for 24 months without premium payment.

Prescription Drugs

  • 90% coinsurance
  • Pay Direct Drug Card, generic coverage, except where there is no generic, then brand name is covered
  • Smoking cessation and fertility drugs are excluded

Vision Coverage

  • Eye exams are covered up to $100 every 24 months
  • Glasses or contacts or laser vision correction covered to $200 every 24 months (children under 18 covered every 12 months)
  • Coverage ends before retirement or age 70

Supplemental Dental Plan

Employees working at least 30 hours a week are eligible after 1 month of uninterrupted service. Bi-weekly cost of coverage is $2.27 Single / $6.75 Family. This plan features:

  • No deductible
  • Preventive and basic services are covered at 90%
  • Major services are covered at 50%
  • Orthodontia for dependent children is covered at 50% up to $1,500 lifetime maximum
  • Plan maximum of $2,000, combined, per calendar year for basic, preventive, and major services
  • Termination age is 70 or earlier retirement
  • Survivor benefits for 24 months without premium payment.
